What Is Five Nights at Freddy's?

Five Nights at Freddy's is a survival horror game that strips away every comfort and replaces it with dread. You're a night security guard. You have a chair, some cameras, two doors, and a limited power supply. That's it. The animatronic characters that entertain children during the day go rogue after closing time — and your only job is to not get caught.

Built almost entirely by one person, Scott Cawthon, and launched in August 2014, the game became a cultural phenomenon almost overnight. Its genius lies in what it takes away: you cannot move, you cannot fight back, and every action you take burns through the same finite power supply. Tension builds from scarcity, not spectacle.

The Story Behind the Pizza

Freddy Fazbear's Pizza looks like an ordinary family restaurant. Animatronic animals perform on stage, kids eat pizza, and everyone goes home happy. But behind the cheerful facade, something is deeply wrong. Staff have reported the animatronics moving on their own after hours, and previous employees didn't last long.

You've just taken the night-shift position — a job no one else wanted. Between midnight and 6 AM, the robots come alive. They roam the dark hallways, drawn to noise and movement. Your only advantage is the camera system and the pair of lockable doors on either side of your office.

How to Play

Everything happens from your office. You never leave — you just try to last until morning.

ActionWhat It Does
Mouse — Camera MonitorPull up the security feed to track animatronics across 11 camera views
Mouse — Hall LightsIlluminate the doorways to check if something is standing just outside
Mouse — Door ButtonsSlam the heavy metal doors shut — but this drains power fast
The core challenge: Every action — cameras, lights, doors — costs electricity. You have a fixed supply for the entire night. Run out before 6 AM and the lights go out. Then Freddy comes.

Meet the Animatronics

Each animatronic behaves differently. Learning their patterns is the only way to survive the later nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Five Nights at Freddy's free to play here?

Yes. You can play Five Nights at Freddy's free in your browser on this page — no download, no sign-up, no plugins required.

Who made Five Nights at Freddy's?

The game was created almost entirely by indie developer Scott Cawthon and first released on August 18, 2014. Its success spawned numerous sequels and a major fan community.

How scary is FNAF?

It's built on sustained tension rather than constant scares — the anticipation is often worse than the jump scares themselves. Most players find it very stressful on the later nights when multiple animatronics are active simultaneously.

What is the main goal of the game?

Survive from midnight to 6 AM for five consecutive nights. Each night the animatronics become more aggressive. You manage a finite power supply across cameras, lights, and door locks to stay alive.

Why does the power run out?

Every system in the security office — the camera monitor, hall lights, and door locks — draws from a single power supply. It's designed to force trade-offs: you can't watch every camera and keep both doors sealed for the whole night. You have to choose.
