What is Idols of Ash

Idols of Ash is a horror descent game developed by Leafy Games where you rappel thousands of meters into a dark, ancient abyss — while something hunts you from above. Every second you hesitate, it gets closer. The tension never lets up.

Unlike most horror games that rely on jump scares, Idols of Ash builds dread through pressure and momentum. The deeper you descend, the darker and tighter the shaft becomes, and the closer the creature gets. It's minimalist, atmospheric, and utterly relentless.

Key Gameplay Elements

  • Grappling Hook Descent — your only tool to descend, swing, and survive
  • The Murderpede — a colossal centipede that hunts you relentlessly from above; stop moving and it catches you
  • Kiln Checkpoints — ancient kilns scattered through the shaft that restore health and save progress
  • Physics-Based Movement — real rope physics react to your weight and velocity, rewarding skilled "schmovement"
  • 3D Spatial Audio — track the Murderpede's distance purely by sound; high-pitched chittering means accelerate
  • Multiple Difficulty Modes — Normal, Nightmare, First Kiln, and Inverted variants for every skill level

Every Game Mode in Idols of Ash

Idols of Ash rewards mastery. Each mode unlocks only after you've conquered the one before it — there are no shortcuts into the deep.

ModeDifficultyDescription
NormalModerateThe core 20–30 minute descent. Learn the shaft, master the hook, outrun the Murderpede.
NightmareHighIncreased monster speed, tighter platforming gaps, no tutorial warmup. Unlocked after completing Normal.
The First KilnExtremeThe hardest challenge in the game. A brutal gauntlet with an extremely aggressive centipede and zero margin for error. Only for those who have mastered Nightmare.
Nightmare (Inverted)ExtremeUnlocked by completing First Kiln. The map flips — your instincts become your enemy.
First Kiln (Inverted)ExtremeExperimental endgame mode. Complete Nightmare (Inverted) to unlock. Finishing this awards the Ashen Hook cosmetic.

How to Play Idols of Ash Game

The objective is simple: reach the bottom. The execution is anything but. You control a climber descending an endless vertical shaft using a grappling hook, with a massive centipede closing in from above. Stop moving and you die.

Game Controls

Controls are intentionally lean — everything revolves around the grapple. The game supports fully rebindable keys so you can dial in your own setup.

InputAction
WASDBasic movement
Mouse LookAim your grappling hook
Left Click (Hold)Fire and hold the grapple
SpacebarJump
Left ShiftSprint
EInteract / Action
ESCMenu & mouse sensitivity settings
CtrlSlide down rope
Shift (on rope)Climb up rope
Right Click (Hold)Zoom / peer into distance
Tip: Spend the first few runs just getting a feel for how the hook attaches and how momentum carries you. Rushing before you understand the physics will get you killed fast. Enable Hardware Acceleration in your browser for stable 60FPS.

Descend Using the Grappling Hook

The grappling hook is your entire toolkit. You can hook onto walls, overhangs, and platforms to swing yourself deeper into the shaft. A well-timed hook at the right angle can carry you past entire sections in seconds. A mistimed one will send you into a wall at full speed.

  • Aim diagonally downward to gain depth quickly
  • Use overhangs to swing wide and clear obstacles
  • Fire the hook just before impact to absorb fall damage
  • Chain hooks back-to-back to maintain speed without stopping

Be Careful with the Centipede

The centipede is always above you, always moving. It doesn't respawn — it's one continuous pursuer that adapts its speed to the section. In Normal mode it gives you breathing room; in Nightmare and First Kiln modes it becomes nightmarishly fast.

Warning: Taking a break mid-descent to plan your next move is a death sentence in harder modes. Stay moving.

Manage Your Health Bar

Fall damage accumulates silently. A short drop here, a glancing wall there — before you know it you're critically low heading into a complex section. Kilns restore your health and act as checkpoints, so planning your route between kilns is part of the skill loop.

Handy Tips and Tricks For Survival

  • The 45-Degree Rule — release your grapple when your body reaches a 45-degree angle in the swing for maximum horizontal distance
  • Never free-fall more than one floor uncontrolled — fall damage accumulates silently; you'll notice it only when it's too late
  • Fire the hook just before impact — a horizontal hook fired a split second before landing absorbs a significant chunk of fall damage
  • Use your ears — the Murderpede's chittering rises in pitch as it closes in; that audio spike is your cue to push harder
  • Don't look back — you can't outrun something while watching it. Trust the sound, keep eyes forward
  • Memorize kiln locations — knowing where the next checkpoint is tells you exactly how much risk you can afford between saves
  • In Nightmare mode, pre-plan two floors ahead — scan your drop zone before committing to a swing direction; hesitation in execution is more dangerous than a wrong choice made fast
