Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning is a first-person survival horror game that wears the costume of a broken 1990s CD-ROM educational program. You enter a school to retrieve seven notebooks left behind by a friend. Each notebook has three math problems. The first two are solvable. The third, starting from the second notebook onward, is not.
Every wrong answer makes Baldi move faster —permanently, for that run. By the time you register what's happening, you're navigating maze-like corridors with an accelerating teacher behind you and no clear route to the exit. The dissonance between the cheerful, deliberately crude presentation and what's actually chasing you is precisely what made the game go viral.

Who Made It?
Baldi's Basics was created by Micah McGonigal (known online as "mystman12") for a 2018 "Meta Game Jam" — a competition requiring entries to comment on games themselves. Working alone, McGonigal drew on childhood memories of clunky 1990s edutainment software and built something that mimics that aesthetic convincingly enough to be uncomfortable.
The character Baldi originated from comic strips McGonigal drew as a kid. The game's visual style was directly inspired by Sonic's Schoolhouse, a real 1996 Sega educational title. What started as a two-week jam entry spawned a Kickstarter-funded sequel (Baldi's Basics Plus) and a full Classic Remastered release in 2022.

Your objective: find all seven notebooks scattered across the school, then locate and reach the exit. Answer as many math problems correctly as you can —each wrong answer raises Baldi's speed for the rest of the run. Collect items along the way and use them strategically to create distance or deal with other characters blocking your path.
Tip: The school layout is fixed. After your first run, you'll already know roughly where the notebooks and exit are. That knowledge compounds quickly.
Characters & Obstacles
Baldi isn't the only hazard roaming the halls. Each character operates by its own logic:
- Baldi — the pursuer. His ruler slaps signal proximity; louder means closer. Speed increases with every incorrect answer and never resets mid-run.
- Principal of the Thing — enforces school rules. Running in the halls or entering the staff lounge sends you to detention, burning precious time.
- It's a Bully — plants himself in corridors and takes one item before letting you pass. Don't let him take something critical.
- Playtime — grabs you and forces a jump rope minigame. Fail and the count resets. Safety scissors from your inventory cut the rope immediately.
- 1st Prize — a rolling machine that charges directly at you. Hard to sidestep in narrow hallways; worse when Baldi is also nearby.
Scattered items —noise-makers, energy drinks, soda cans, and more— each counter specific threats. Knowing when to use them matters more than hoarding them.
Tips to Survive
- Protect your answer streak early. The first notebook's math is straightforward. Getting those right keeps Baldi slow for longer and buys breathing room for the later, impossible questions.
- Treat stamina as a limited resource. Sprinting feels safe until you run out mid-chase. Walk when you're not being pursued.
- Detention is a death sentence near the end. The Principal moves around — check before you run, and avoid the lounge entirely.
- Save noise-makers for real emergencies. Tossing one when Baldi is already close wastes it. Use it to redirect him when you need to cross his path.
- Map the school mentally. The layout doesn't change between runs. Dead ends, notebook locations, and the exit position stay consistent — use that.
Tip: Endless Mode (available in the mobile Classic version) removes the exit objective entirely. Baldi speeds up with each notebook collected, and the only goal is to last as long as possible.
